Installation of the program itself is quite straightforward - the setup program (SetupCHROMuLANxxx.exe, where xxx is version number) should be self-explanatory. It creates item in Program Start folder, registers ULF file extension as Chromulan Data File and copies CHROMuLAN.exe executable, CHROMuLAN.hlp help file, "uLan" device driver files (ul_drv.sys for WinNT, ul_wdm.sys for Win98/2000 with corresponding .inf files) and other utility programs to the destination directory of your choice (C:\Program Files\CHROMuLAN - default) and some sample data files to DemoData subdirectory.
Under Windows NT/2000 must be the setup program run from Administrator account, because it needs to work with system registry and system devices.
Device driver will be needed in "uLan" device mode. Its installation differs according to operating system:
WinNT system uses ul_drv.sys device driver file, that can system administrator install by usual way from Control Panel | Devices or it can be also installed from the CHROMuLAN program using "Setup | Options | Ulan | UL_DRV Setup dialog. After setting correct values for Port Addres, IRQ (correspond to the serial port used for connection or supplied uLan card) and Baud rate (usually 9600), check "Auto config" checkbox and the device driver will be loaded automatically from the CHROMuLAN.
The users that will run the program must also have privileges that allow to load devices and modify system registry. Other possibility is to install the ul_drv.sys device driver with Automatic start property, so that it gets started during the system startup.
Copy files ul_wdm.sys and ul_wdm98.inf to floppy disk, then find in the list of devices (Control Panel | System | Device Manager) the serial port used for connection (usually COM1 or COM2) of device that uses uLan protocol for communication. Edit properties of the serial port, click on Update Driver button, choose update from diskette. After confirmation of the driver update reboot PC while the connected uLan device is switched on.
Copy files ul_wdm.sys and ul_wdm2k.inf to floppy disk, then find in the list of devices (Control Panel | System | Device Manager) the serial port used for connection (usually COM1 or COM2) of device that uses uLan protocol for communication. Edit properties of the serial port, click on Update Driver button then choose update from diskette.
Uninstallation is supported through the standard Windows mechanism - Start | Settings | Control panel | Add remove program. It will remove installed files and registry settings. The (sub)directories won't be removed if there are some data in them. You have to do that manually.
